One of the protestors involved was a University of Cincinnati Student Kevin Kinebrew. Throughout his life, he says he has witnessed racial injustice, but never felt like he had a voice.
“Me being so young, I understood what was happening, but I felt like I wasn’t at an age where I could really demonstrate how I really felt and throughout my life and throughout high school and even coming into college I’ve seen it happen over and over,” Kinebrew said.
And now with his voice, he’s advocating for change.
“It’s time to make a change. And it’s not just one of us, it’s not just one race. As you can see it’s very diverse, so it’s showing that it’s not just coming from one person, so this injustice needs to stop.”
Giving a voice to people like Kinebrew is what organizers say is the sole purpose of this event.
“We brought people from across the river and the state here to be able to speak and really be able to give a voice from the student’s perspective because we are the future,” said Janiah Miller, protest organizer.
And just like Kinebrew, activist Anna Sheldon says she’s ready to make a difference.
“This is the bare minimum that all of us should be doing right now,” said Sheldon. “This should have been happening hundreds of years ago. I’m really glad that it seems like people have woken up recently,” Sheldon said.
Through this protest she hopes to see some kind of reform.
“I’m hoping that the protests will lead to extreme legislation changes,” she said. “I’m hoping that the voices will continue to be heard and that the people in power will realize that we’re not going anywhere and we won’t until real reform is made.”
