CLEVELAND, Ohio —  Even with major athletic events on hold, "the show must go on" for sports talk radio.

Minutes after getting off air, Ken Carman, Anthony Lima and the crew of 92.3 The Fan are critiquing the show and brainstorming ideas.

  • 92.3 The Fan is a radio station in Cleveland
  • Ken Carman and Anthony Lima host "The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima"
  • The NBA and NHL season are currently postponed.

“I cannot believe we had a forty minute argument about the fullback!” Carman tells the crew.

With almost every sports league currently shut down over coronavirus concerns, they’re getting creative on air.

"That has been the challenge, but it’s also been kind of a rewarding challenge, because if we can do a talk show without sports, we can do a talk show about anything!" said Lima.

Sports games might be out of the picture. But NFL free agency — especially Tom Brady and what the Browns are doing —has given radio hosts plenty to talk about.

While Andy Baskin and Jeff Phelps take over the airwaves to chat about the NFL offseason, Carman and Lima will have a new slate of topics to fill their four hour show tomorrow.

“I hate to do the whole Mount Rushmore thing and things like that, but there’s a lot of connections of ‘alright, what does this guy represent to you as a fan,' and we did that with the Browns fullback today, so there’s a lot of different things that you either stumble upon, or it just comes to you in daily life now," said Carman.

Though a global pandemic has changed life everywhere, the folks at 92.3 are still finding ways to connect with their local listeners, and brighten their days a bit.

"Just the way that this town is and so many things that we can do on a local sports talk radio show that involves people’s lives and how they’re impacted to try to find the lighter side of some of this very tough news," said Lima.

"There’s a whole lot of things that I think we’re learning more about our listeners and hopefully our listeners are learning about us," said Carman.
