DAYTON, Ohio– The University of Dayton Flyers are riding a 19-game winning streak, which has allowed the team to soar to the number three ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.

  • The University of Dayton Flyers are one win away from setting the record for most wins in a season by a Flyers team.
  • Dayton has not lost a single game in the Atlantic 10 conference this season.
  • A win over George Washington would clinch a perfect conference record in the regular season.
  • Dayton fans are energized and believe the team can make a run to the national championship game.

And the fanbase is going absolutely crazy for what some call the best Flyers basketball team they’ve ever seen.

Fans like Nick Dix say the team has soared past all expectations.

“It’s fantastic, I really knew they were gonna be good this year, I never expected this,” he said.

Dix has been coming to Flyers games since he was a young boy, and now 50 years later, he says they’re the best team he’s ever seen and believes the Flyers can win it all.

“The number one team in the country is Kansas, we played em dead-even in Maui,” he said. “We can win this. We can win it all. This is the first time in my life I can actually say that.”

A big reason for that success is the play of Wooden Award Candidate Obi Toppin.

Toppin said the team is energized by the support from the Flyers faithful.

“We go out and play for Dayton every single day,” Toppin said.

He knows how much this winning streak means to the city, especially after everything the city has been through.

“They had the two tragedies that push us every single day to play basketball and push us to work harder every single day,” he said. “Because tomorrow isn’t promised to anybody.”

Flyers head coach Anthony Grant said the support from the fans has been tremendous, just how it’s always been, even when he was a player.

“Grateful, that we get a chance to reward our fanbase with an (Atlantic 10) championship,” Grant said. “Because they’re extremely loyal, and they love the flyers. That’s always been the case since I played here 30 years ago.”

And for fans like Dix, it would mean everything to see the Flyers make a deep tournament run.

“What this city has been through the last year, it’s indescribable,” Dix said. “What this would mean, excuse me, I get emotional, to this region… Like I said, I’ve been a fan my whole life. I can’t really imagine what it’s been like. If that ever happens, Dayton deserves it.”
