CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ten-year-old Jayden Thompson and his dad Matthew have always been wrestling fans.
- A 10-year-old boy was invited into the ring for a chance to win the boots worn by a wrestling superstar
- He pinned his opponent and won the boots
- The crowd went wild with excitement and the boy became an overnight sensation
"We watch it every Monday, every Friday, all the Pay-Per-Views, every Wednesday for 'Dynamite,'" said Matthew Thompson.
So what better way to celebrate Jayden’s birthday, than with tickets to the rowdy, first-ever All Elite Wrestling Dynamite show at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, after friend Mike Allen won tickets from a local radio station.
"I called Matt and I said, ‘hey man, you want to go? I won four tickets to the wrestling show!” said Allen.
But what they didn’t see coming was superstar Cody Rhodes issuing a challenge to a lucky fan for a chance to win the pair of boots he had wrestled in earlier in the night.
"And he points around and he says ‘you right there with the red hair.’ And Jayden kind of goes, ‘who, me?’ And I’m like ‘yea dude, you got red hair! Get in there!’" Allen explained.
“He does his homework! He studies for tests! He listens to his parents!" ring announcer Justin Roberts said while introducing Jadyen.
After an epic introduction from Roberts, all Jayden had to do was pin AEW wrestler Brandon Cutler. Of course, Jayden had a little help from the tag team The Young Bucks, who both delivered a pair of super kicks to Cutler.
"He took off his boots, and he was holding them. He gave them to me. I was just trying not to like scream because it’s like my favorite wrestler, and I got his boots!" said Jayden Thompson.
A video of Jayden winning was posted on Twitter. It’s been viewed over 100,000 times, and even got the attention of Cody Rhodes himself.
Jayden's dad is still trying to process all of it.
"It was unreal. I mean, I couldn’t put in words, I just said ‘oh my God!’” said Matthew Thompson.
Jayden still has some growing to do before the boots fit him, but he doesn’t seem bothered by the size.
"It’s so cool to have my favorite wrestler’s boots!” he said.
And his dad, despite already being a longtime wrestling fan, is joining a new fan club.
"I tip my hat to him. You know, he’s my favorite, now you know. Just watching the video over and over again, you know, just every time I watch it, it’s just still, still amazing as when it first happened," said Matthew Thompson.
It was a major win, not just for this young man, but everyone cheering him on.
