PENINSULA, Ohio — There's a bit of nostalgia when you board the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad.
- It’s a unique way to see and experience Ohio's only national park
- The train offers everything from educational programs to adult and kid-friendly events
- Some of the most popular excursions include the Polar Express, dinner on the train and a murder mystery ride
It's a tourist excursion railway that runs through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
From Independence to Akron, there's a lot to see along this historic rail line.
"It's really special because it's kind of nestled in a suburban area and so you're not only seeing the beauty of the national park, but you're also seeing historic towns like the village of Peninsula," said Katie Brewer, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad public relations manager.
Trains have been moving along this route since 1880, transporting coal to Cleveland, Akron and Canton.
In the 20th century, the line switched over as a scenic excursion route and it's run completely by volunteers.
"I love running a locomotive, but it's mainly about the people. I love the people," said Tim Osyk, locomotive engineer.
From educational programs, to adult and kid-friendly events, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
"I think it's a great experience for the kids. They love it, I definitely recommend it," said Brent Anness, a train passenger.
During the holiday season, the railroad is home to the Polar Express. But it also offers other excursions, such as a murder mystery ride for those looking to solve a crime, Ales on Rails —a beer-tasting event, or dinner on the train for an elegant dining experience.
"You get on the train, we give you a glass of champagne, we have four courses of executive chef-prepared food, wine is served throughout the courses, there's a complimentary bar," said Brewer.
The train excursions happen year-round, with trips lasting anywhere from an hour and a half to more than three hours.
Whether you choose to sit in a table car, a lounge car, the kid car, or a dome car, it's a ride that offers gorgeous views and a unique window of Northeast Ohio.
"We're encouraging people from the national park to get on the train and we're encouraging passengers on the train who have never been in the park to get out and explore," Brewer said.
