ELYRIA, Ohio — People are testing their gaming skills with Oculus Quest virtual reality headsets at the Elyria Public Library.
- 10 VR headsets were donated to the Elyria Public Library by the Nordson Corporation
- The library says they're preparing people for the future
- The virtual reality classes are available throughout the Elyria Public Library System
The library is offering classes to teach people how to explore virtual reality.
Ten VR headsets were donated to the Elyria Public Library by the Nordson Corporation.
The headsets are pricey, but at the library, people can learn how to use them for free.
Danielle Coward, the outreach coordinator for Elyria libraries, says they are helping folks of all ages prepare for the future.
“And not everybody has had the opportunity to use it, it is expensive right now and this will provide both youth and adults an opportunity to try out virtual reality… in the future, we expect virtual reality to be necessary for certain jobs, certain training programs, so this gets people the opportunity to try it out and get their feet wet,” said Coward.
When you first put on the headset, you have to get familiar with the controls to navigate this new world.
Participants are asked to do several simple things to learn how everything works.
With the headsets, people can explore different places, while learning an emerging technology.
“From what I understand, not many libraries in the country are doing it, so they are on the forefront, so that’s why I wanted to check it out,” said Neal Mabrouk, an Elyria resident. “I’m always trying to see what’s new… I’m into the 3D printing world and engineering is what I do for a living, so something like this is pretty cool.”
