MIDDLETOWN, Ohio — This time of the year, many people want to donate to those in need.

But as one Middletown couple found out, there wasn’t a place to do that in their community. There was nowhere in town they could find to donate their kids’ toys and clothes.

So, they decided to do it themselves

  • They laid out the clothes and toys in their office and allowed anyone in need to take whatever they wanted for free
  • Things went so quickly, that the entire community started dropping off items and now their storefront is filled with donations open to those in need
  • People who have visited left with bags full of gifts for their children for Christmas

It started out as just a way to donate their kids' unused toys and clothing.

But now it’s turned into a community-wide donation center.

Madison and Kyle Brummett own their own security and private investigation business in downtown Middletown.

The couple wanted to give back this year with toys and clothes their kids no longer used.  So, Madison reached out to the community.

“I asked, is there a good place in Middletown to donate? I was getting responses like crazy,” Madison said.

That prompted her and her husband to start a donation center right in the middle of their business.

“There really isn’t anything like this around this area and it is something that should be in high demand, not just during holidays," Kyle said.

Soon enough, all of their own things were gone, but donations from around the community started pouring in —from shoes, to clothes, to food, to toys.

“We have had quite a few people take and they said, you know what, I actually have some things that they no longer fit in, can I bring it back and donate?" Madison said. "And we said absolutely, because there’s always someone in need.”

The couple has even involved their two children, who now recognize that some families can use their stuff more than they can.

“They would come up to Kyle or I and be like, we can take this, we can give this away, somebody else can have this," Madison said.

For people that have visited, they’ve left with bags full of gifts for their children for Christmas.

“If it wasn’t for people like these people here, some people wouldn’t have anything for Christmas," Alysha Willeford a Middletown resident that visited the donation center said.

For Kyle and Madison it wasn’t for the attention.  It was to help those in need in their community

“We’re not looking for a pat on the back or to be recognized, really," Madison said. "It’s just something we wanted to do. ”

“From the bottom of my heart, thank you so very much," Willeford said.

If you have any items to donate, you can drop them off at Intelligence Risk Management/ Blueline Protection Services in downtown Middletown.

Kyle and Madison say they’ll continue to keep the donation center open as long as they have donations.
