The life-size artwork was crafted by artist John Seibels Walker of North Carolina. Each governor selects the artist of their choice.
Walker released a statement to Spectrum News 1 saying, in part, "It was quite an honor to be the artist chosen to paint the official portrait of Ohio Governor John Kasich. The Ohio Statehouse displays an impressive collection of portraits honoring its governors and it was my goal to create a unique addition to that collection."
The portrait is set at the Ohio Holocaust and Liberators Memorial, next to the Statehouse. The location holds significance to the former governor because in 2011, Gov. Kasich proposed the memorial to honor Holocaust survivors and World War II veterans. The memorial was completed and officially unveiled in 2014.
The portrait will join the permanent collection of art at the Statehouse, which includes a portrait of each former Ohio governor.
