CLEVELAND, Ohio—Don’t be shocked to see this coach in a Cleveland neighborhood near you, providing potentially life-saving health screenings.

  • A Cleveland hospital is fighting breast cancer by increasing access to mammogram screenings
  • MetroHealth’s traveling Mobile 3D Mammography Coach is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to provide mammograms to people across the Cleveland area
  • MetroHealth says it's working on plans to expand hours and days of the week the coach is available

Yvonne Varfield is leaving the Mobile 3D Mammography Coach pleasantly surprised after her routine mammogram screening.

“It was a good experience, they were quick, they were friendly, and I felt taken care of,” said Varfield.

The coach offers breast cancer screenings with state-of-the-art equipment.

MetroHealth Radiology Administrator Diane Weber says the coach started running back in July after a three-year effort, with a goal of making mammogram services more accessible.

“What we had found is that we had a lot of patients in our service area that weren’t seeking mammography services. And some of that was due to barriers of just being able to get to healthcare facilities,” said Weber.

And so far, the coach has 5 regular locations, while also going to employers and community events, with plans to expand hours and days of the week.

Varfield says this is great news for neighborhoods across Cleveland.

“You know, some women and men have some difficulty getting out to the different offices, so if it can be in the community or close to the community, that would be better,” said Varfield.
