DAYTON, Ohio—Today, the president and first lady toured not one, but two cities reeling from mass shootings this past weekend.
- This was President Trump’s fourth visit to Ohio this year
- In March, he visited Canton and Lima
- In July, he visited Cleveland, and last week he held a campaign rally in Cincinnati
The president spent about three hours in Dayton and did not make a trip to the Oregon District.
Wheels down for President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump at Wright Patterson Air Force Base occurred around 11 a.m.
The president greeted Ohio Governor Mike DeWine (R), Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, Senators Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Congressman Mike Turner (R-Ohio).
After handshakes and brief conversations, the president waved to cameras and said, “Thank You.” He and the first lady then got into the presidential limo with DeWine and Whaley.
They traveled directly to Miami Valley Hospital near downtown Dayton.
White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham tweeted that President Trump and the first lady met with patients and stopped between rooms to thank hospital workers.
She also tweeted the president, who said, “You had God watching. I want you to know we’re with you all the way.”
The president spent about an hour and forty minutes at the hospital.
Shortly before 2 p.m., the president and first lady returned to Air Force One and departed for El Paso, Texas.
The president made no public comments, but Whaley, along with Brown, shared thoughts at City Hall.
“I reiterated to the president the importance of action around the issues of guns and the people of Dayton are waiting on action from people in Washington, D.C.,” said Whaley. “I talked a bit to the chief of staff, who was there, about red flag laws and how there’s certain legislation that Lindsey Graham and Blumenthal are moving to make sure that we can have a national red flag law. And there’s a piece in that legislation that would actually make Ohio and Texas be a pilot for cities to go right to the federal courts for it. So, I reiterated that.”
While the president didn’t make public comments while he was in the Gem City, we will have to wait and see over the coming days if he will do so while back at the White House.
