OHIO – If you're renting in Columbus, you're better of than 20 other large cities in America.
According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, a household that spends more than 30% of their income on housing is considered "cost-burdened."
In some big cities, it's easier to stay under that percentage than others. In a new study, SmartAsset uncovered the income needed to comfortably pay rent in the 25 largest U.S. cities and found that renting in Columbus requires the fifth-lowest income.
Columbus has an average monthly rent of $1,050 for a two-bedroom apartment, so the average yearly rent cost is $12,600. A household would need to earn an income of at least $45,000 to pay the rent and not be cost-burdened.
At the top of the list, you would need to make $196,843 to live in San Francisco, and your best bet is Memphis, Tennessee, where that number drops to $34,886.
The median household income in Columbus is almost $7,000 higher than that, at $51,708. Columbus is one of just five cities in our study, where the income needed to rent is less than the median household income.
