CLEVELAND, Ohio—Baseball fans were definitely excited to see their favorite players at the 2019 Home Run Derby.

“We are so pumped to see Santana gonna crush some homers for the Indians… go Santana!” said Frankie Logan, of New Jersey.

And Santana did knock some balls out of the park. But the hometown slugger fell short of the Mets’ Pete Alonso by just one home run in the first round.

The game was filled with hometown fans, but other cities were represented— even with their mascots.

“It’s our first time in Progressive Field, my son’s first Major League All-Star game,” said Chris Baranick, of Detroit. “I think it’s awesome… it’s a great venue, everybody in the city has been great... we were down in the Convention Center and it was awesome, all the free stuff …it was fun.”

There were plenty of fathers with their sons at the game.

And a mother and son who have been making baseball a family tradition every summer.

“It’s been awesome…my son and I are actually going around to every baseball stadium,” said Arati Dunbar, of San Francisco. “We’ve been doing this, it’s the fourth summer we are doing this, and we were coming out to Cleveland and since the All-Star Game, this is our second Home Run Derby. We are really excited to see everybody. It’s a family tradition… I’m not sure he actually knew he had a choice as to whether to like baseball or not.”

It was an experience Dunbar’s son likely won’t forget.

“It’s amazing… I couldn’t imagine it being this amazing,” said Justin Dunbar. “We’ve got mascots here, there’s so many people, it’s so diverse with all the fans… it’s just amazing.”
