Federal emergency management officials say you need to have a plan and make a survival kit ahead of time.
"When you see the sun out, the bright sunny day, that's the time to prepare — not wait until the storm is already on us to prepare for any type of situation," says Alberto A. Pillot of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"When disasters happen, there's no electricity, no cell (service). So do we know where to go? Do we have numbers just in case? Do people have numbers memorized because all the numbers are on your phone?"
You also should have flood insurance.
