COLUMBUS—Imagine spending just $10 at the grocery store to come home with enough to feed your family of four a delicious and healthy meal.

That's exactly what some people in central Ohio were getting to learn.

  • A local organization is showing central Ohioans how to make healthy food choices on tight budgets
  • Many people lack the education and resources necessary to select and prepare healthy foods
  • Local Matters holds tours and other educational events throughout the year

Local Matters is a Columbus organization that works to make sure everyone has the tools they need to make healthy and economic food decisions.

Monday, they took over a Kroger, offering free tours to anyone who was interested.

Each of the 5 stations offered lessons on what to look for, from reading ingredients and units, to trying out recipes.

The goal is to try to battle the stigma that you can't eat healthy on a tight budget.

"Because I think you think organic fruit or organic vegetables are more expensive. Well some fruits and vegetables it makes sense to buy organic, but some it's not necessary. And then also knowing that canned and frozen options are equally nutritious," said Jill Short, participant.

Jill Short dominated the $10 challenge—collecting all the ingredients she needed for her meals and still had a dollar left over.

Local Matters holds these tours and other educational events throughout the year.
