ORLANDO, Fla. — Marcos Marchena, the UCF Board of Trustees member who stepped down as chairman last month in the wake of an improper spending investigation by the school, has resigned from the board altogether.

In a resignation letter submitted to the Florida Board of Governors, Marchena said he couldn't effectively serve on the board because "it is seldom good for a past chairman to look over the shoulders of a new chairman."
He said that during the UCF Board of Trustees' meeting Tuesday — the first meeting since he resigned as chairman — Marchena limited his input out of respect for the new chairman.
Marchena stepped down as the board's chairman just two weeks ago amid a spending scandal involving the school. UCF has acknowledged misspending tens of millions of funds in construction projects, most notably the $38 million Trevor Colbourn Hall in 2014. President Dale Whittaker has fired four senior administration officials and has denied being aware that the money was being misused.
Marchena's resignation was effective immediately, his letter said.
