Franklin County, OH -- Shelter dogs in Franklin County were given a break from their kennels this weekend. It's a part of a sleepover program that the Franklin County Dog Shelter and Adoption Center shelter started this year.

  • The Holiday Sleepover program allows families to host a dog over Thanksgiving.
  • The families are able to tell the shelter how the dog adapted to the home setting.
  • Volunteers are able to spend less time at the shelter and more time with their families over the holiday.

“During this time we're not open, so the dogs aren't going to get adopted during that day and to get them out of this environment would help relieve some stress from them, help relieve some stress for our volunteers and for our staff, so it's just a win, win, win for everyone,” Director Kaye Dickson said.

Madeline Tadros and her two nephews came in looking for pup to host over the holiday. They decided on Duke, but didn't realize how far they'd fallen for the dog.

“He was a nice dog. He just clicked and he's a good addition to the family. He's fun. He had good personality and I think he'll fit very well with the members in this family,” Tadros said.

Tadros decided to adopt Duke and give him a forever home.

The shelter told Spectrum News 1 that 13 other dogs were also adopted and 60 were able to enjoy a host family this Thanksgiving.

The shelter plans on continuing the sleepover program over Christmas and into the new year.
