Lawmakers at the statehouse want to name Wright Flyer III as the state’s airplane.

State Sen. Terry Johnson, R-McDermott, is one of the sponsors of the proposal. He talked with In Focus host, Mike Kallmeyer, about where the idea to make that the state airplane came from.

“Bob Nelson, former captain in the Airforce gave me the idea, my team researched it, then we decided to move forward with the Wright Flyer III,” Johnson said.

The Wright Flyer III was created by Orville and Wilbur Wright, it was considered the first practical airplane made. Johnson talked explained to Kallmeyer why it is so important to preserve the state’s history.

“Ohio has always been the leader in aviation, and I hope that we’ll continue to do so,” he said.
