In honor of Juneteenth, the Senior Director of Education and Community Engagement at the National Underground Freedom Center, Chris Miller, joined Mike Kallmeyer to talk about the history of the day.
Troops in Texas were some of the last people to find out about the emancipation proclamation.
“It was an opportunity to reunite, an opportunity to celebrate a day of emancipation, finally, that would continue on through the decades,” he said.
Miller talked with Mike about the importance of Juneteenth now being a federal holiday.
“This is a part of the branch of the tree of freedom,” he said. For Miller, the day is a chance to celebrate, reflect and appreciate the sacrifices others made in order to make the freedom possible.
