State Sen. Nickie Antonio joined Mike Kallmeyer to discuss the importance of celebrating Pride Month.

“It’s necessary for members of the LGBTQ community to have a day, a weekend, to celebrate what I like to call our fabulousness,” she said.

She said it’s important to have that public acknowledgement that people in the LGBTQ+ community are contributing members of society. Antonio explained that the month is about continuing to fight for equal rights in addition to celebrating.

She also addressed ways that the state could compromise on certain issues that apply to the LGBTQ+ community and have become controversial. More specifically, she points to guidelines that are already in place by high school and collegiate athletic associations for transgender girls and women to play on female sports teams.

Antonio said she will continue to advocate for legislation that supports the growth and success of Ohioans in the LGBTQ+ community.
