Veteran and first-year lawmaker State Rep. Steve Demetriou, R-Bainbridge Twp., joined Mike Kallmeyer on In Focus to discuss the importance of taking Memorial Day to remember the men and women who lost their lives serving in the United States Military.

“I certainly try to remember two guys that I attended WestPoint with that were my classmates,” he said.

Demetriou said both of them died in Afghanistan. He wears a bracelet with their names on it almost every day to remember and honor them.

Memorial Day is a hard day for many families who lost loved ones. Demetriou said it is important not to forget about the families after a serviceman or servicewoman dies. He talked with Mike about what the government should be doing to help the families.

“I think it’s important to make sure that they have all the mental health needs taken care of during their grieving process that they need to honor their lost loved ones,” he said.
