KENTUCKY — This week on "In Focus Kentucky," we’re celebrating Women’s History Month, which is celebrated every March to reflect on the contributions of women to U.S. history.
Heather Dieffenbach, executive director of the Lexington Public Library, joined the program to discuss details about the library's Women History Month Film Series. She also discussed the importance of reflecting on the significant role women have played in the library profession, particularly in Kentucky.
Dieffenbach said women have been pivotal in establishing and sustaining public libraries, with many holding leadership positions.
"For me, personally, in the library field, I think about the way this profession and a lot of public libraries across the country, especially in Kentucky, have been built by women," she said. "Women really have been the lifeblood of public libraries throughout its history. It's a very female-dominant profession."
"Women helped to start the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives. I don't think a lot of people know this, but it was actually the wives of legislators at the State Capitol who really advocated for and helped to build the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives."
