NOBLE COUNTY, Ohio — Ohio is home to all that remains of the largest dragline ever built. It was named Big Muskie.
The bucket for the machine was 220 cubic yards and 240 tons. It was commissioned in 1969 and operated until 1991.
Ronald Mingus is a park manager with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
“There was some talk about trying to save it as a museum for its historical significance. And unfortunately, the whole machine couldn't be saved, but the bucket itself was saved and moved here in 2001, and Miner’s Memorial Park was created," he said.
Miner’s Memorial Park is in Jesse Owens State Park. It serves as a monument to the achievements of American Electric Power and the Central Ohio Coal Company.
