COLUMBUS, Ohio — There’s a new recreation destination for Franklin County and beyond. The new Quarry Trails Metro Park in Columbus is part of the effort to have a metro park within five miles of every Franklin County resident.
"Since the middle 1800s, this has been an active quarry," said Tim Moloney, the executive director of Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks.
Beds of limestone are prevalent at the park. It’s been harvested and used for an array of construction projects in central Ohio.
Those include “the Ohio Statehouse, Ohio stadium (at The Ohio State University), I-71, I-70 — all of our major roads really have rocks that have come out of this quarry," said Moloney.
Current amenities include trails, observation areas, a single-track mountain bike trail, a waterfall and lakes. Moloney said more phases of the park will open later this year.
“Almost like every one of our metro parks, they’re never really done. As we get into the fall and early winter, we’re going to have a sledding hill that I’m going to tell you is going to be the best sledding hill in central Ohio,” he said.
A pavilion for large events and a boathouse will also be built.
