CHARLOTTE -- Just eight years ago, Daniel Fogarty and a group decided to try to help with a problem they saw in Charlotte.

"A group of us about eight years ago that decided as we looked at the continunim of services in mecklenburg county, one of the largest gaps was families transitioning out of homelessness into permanment housing, but they didn't have any furniture,” said Fogarty.

So, they started collecting furniture. "We started collecting furniture in a one car garage," said Fogarty.

In just that first year, Fogarty and his group, now a Charlotte non-profit called "Beds for Kids,"  helped provide furniture to 256 kids. They also provide a Bible.

Since then, that number has grown to thousands, hitting 10,000 people served.

"The initial delivery is incredible, but the three months, six months, twelve months later to hear the stories of kids' grades improving,” said Fogarty.

The kind of stories that Fogarty often hears about in letters from families.

One letter said "words can't explain how much our lives have changed. We all are getting a good night's rest. Our backs no longer ache from sleeping on worn out mattresses and we can all sit at our kitchen table and have dinner as a family."

That letter from one of the ten thousand people impacted by Fogarty and the group of volunteers at “Beds for Kids.” "To think about the fact that ten thousand lives have been impacted is humbling,” said Fogarty.

Fogarty doesn't consider himself a hero, but considers those volunteers, who help assemble, deliver, and clean furniture, those who help him go out everyday to make a difference.

"Day in and day out, there are hundreds of people every week, that come in here and serve, and do things for people that are never seen, they are never honored for all that they do, and some of that, that's the way, they love it,” said Fogarty.

He says those volunteers do all kinds of tasks to help families they don’t even know. “It's to be able to walk in the doors and go on a delivery, or help clean furniture, or work in the woodshop, to do stuff that will change people's lives,” said Fogarty.

Volunteers like Cullen McNulty, who has made 107 deliveries, and keeps tally in his hat.

"They probably think we are heroes, but i think we are just doing what we are called to do, what feels right to give back,” said McNulty.

It’s what Fogarty and volunteers have been doing right here in Charlotte.

"I know that I stand on shoulders of a lot of other people that do so much for so many in the city," said Fogarty.
