LOS ANGELES — The Magic Castle celebrates Black History Month Feb. 4-9 with a showcase of 11 professional African-American magicians from across the U.S. and Canada, performing in every showroom of the venue.

Academy of Magical Arts board member and magician Kenrick “Ice” McDonald curated the event. He is also producing a documentary on the history of Black magicians called “Hidden Shoulders.”

While less than 10% of professional magicians are Black, the Academy of Magical Arts’ Junior Society, youths ages 13 to 21, includes many of the next generation of magicians of color studying the art.

The Magic Castle, the private clubhouse of the Academy of Magical Arts, allows entrance only to members and their guests, or through courtesy invitations that are available to magicians visiting from out of the U.S.

The Magic Castle’s director of entertainment is Jack Goldfinger who, along with his partner Dove, were among the first Black magic acts to appear regularly on television.
