An arrest has been made in connection with the shooting death of an 11-year-old in Troy.

Troy police said Thursday that, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Jahquay E. Brown, 20, was arrested on charges of murder in the second degree in the death of Ayshawn Davis.

According to police, Brown is responsible for shooting and killing 11-year-old Ayshawn Davis. It happened on Old Sixth Avenue back on the evening of September 13.

“I do think that in this case, Ayshawn being 11 years old, I think that was a relevant factor in people being more free to share information,” said Brian Owens, Troy Police chief.

Owens says Brown was arrested at his Cohoes home, where they recovered what is believed to be the murder weapon. Police say the car involved has also been recovered.

“We feel that this arrest has hopefully brought some closure to the family,” said Mary Pat Donnelly, Rensselaer County district attorney.

Brown was arraigned Thursday afternoon on second-degree murder. He pleaded not guilty. No bail was set, and Brown is due back in city court Tuesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing.”

"I feel at peace putting him to rest, now that they found who they need to find for it,” said Latoya Alston, Davis's mother.

His parents thanked police for their work. Calling hours for the 11-year-old are taking place 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. Davis’s funeral will happen on Monday at St. Peter’s cemetery.

“We are lost for words honestly," Alston said. "It’s sad that they had to take my baby’s life, and you all brought them to justice and we’re so thankful.”

Troy Mayor Patrick Madden, in a statement, said he was "relieved" to learn of an arrest being made.

“To Ayshawn’s parents, brothers, sisters, and extended family: I know that this does not repair the hole that has been torn in your lives," Madden said. "But I do hope that you take some measure of comfort in this development as we work to bring those responsible for Ayshawn’s death to earthly justice.”
