A day after an inmate arrived at the Adirondack Correctional Facility in Essex County, a COVID-19 test he took at his previous facility came back positive.
The state Department of Corrections says the asymptomatic inmate is now being isolated and anyone who may have had contact with the inmate is being quarantined and tested. There have been no other positive cases.
Officials say social distancing happens on all transports and protective equipment is provided to everyone involved.
But, just recently, the prison was converted into a facility for elderly inmates, raising concerns from some prison reform advocacy groups.
The group Release Aging People in Prison Campaign held a rally outside of the Adirondack facility earlier this week, concerned about a potential outbreak.
"Putting men, 55 years or older with underlying health conditions, if one man, just one is COVID positive, it will transfer their Adirondack plan into a prison, nursing home death camp," said Jose Saldana, a member of the advocacy group.
Groups, including the RAPP campaign, are pushing for the passage of bills, including one that would give those 55 and older who have served more than 15 years an opportunity to appear before the parole board.
