Spectrum News 1 caught up with Representative Bob Gibbs (R-07) on Wednesday, following President Trump’s State of the Union address. (You can watch the full interview in the video above)

Gibbs said he thought the president delivered a terrific speech that highlighted the state of the economy and criminal justice reform, while also restating the case for a wall on the southern border.

As a supporter of Trump and the border wall, Gibbs said he was pleased the president used part of his speech to discuss what he called a ‘crisis’ at the US-Mexico border.

He said he wants to avoid another partial government shutdown over border security negotiations, but is calling on Democrats to reason more with the president.

Asked how he differentiates between Trump’s scripted speeches and his often divisive tweets, Gibbs said the president faces a lot of criticism and sometimes needs to respond to it.
