OHIO — It's a saying ODOT uses for the first widespread snowfall of the season,"The first is the worst."
What You Need To Know
- Snow showers will slow down travel Thursday especially for our evening commutes
- Road temperatures will likely stay above freezing, but slick spots possible
- Visibility will go down with some blowing snow
- Wind chills will remain below freezing for the entire day
Thursday will bring two main hazards: snow and cold.
Areas in western and southwestern Ohio will have more impact from snow especially later in the day. There's a winter weather advisory issued from 4 p.m. Thursday through Friday morning around Dayton and Cincinnati areas.
First, let's break down the snow.
We are looking at two batches of snow showers on Thursday.
The first will impact the morning commute while temperatures are near freezing.
This means some slick and slushy spots are possible.
Pavement temperatures are mainly above freezing, but still expect to slow down and use extra caution.
Snow looks widely scattered through the afternoon.
A second round of heavier snow will come in for Thursday evening.
This may bring in a quick coating of snow 1-2" for parts of northeast and southwest Ohio.
Drops in visibility from snow showers and these more intense bands will make driving much more difficult.
Snow tapers off overnight and most of the precipitation we see on Friday will be rain.
A lot of this rain will be in the eastern half of the state through Friday night.
The cold is also arriving, something that has not been seen much of this month.
Highs will be about 20 degrees cooler and wind chills with gusty winds will remain in the 20s for the entire day.
Remember, this is not a major snowfall event in terms of accumulation.
It will have a high impact on evening travel conditions as our first snowfall, so slow down and allow plenty of time to get around.
