MASON, Ohio — One year ago, Mason High School forward Gabby Razzano sat on the sidelines.

“First game of the season, I tore it,” she said.

  • She and her teammates are trying to claim the school’s first state title since 2000

She's referring to her ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in her left knee. Her sophomore season was over, but Razzano knew she had to focus on getting back to playing the game she loves.

“I had surgery in December of 2020, and then pretty much every single day I was at (physical rehabilitation) progressing little by little,” Razzano said.

After countless hours of physical therapy and rehab work with her trainer Brittany Bingham, Razzano is back playing a key role for the Comets.

Mason Head Coach Rob Matula said he’s beyond proud of Razzano for fighting to get back on the court.

“Because she’s worked her butt off to get to this position,” Matula said. “And that’s just a testament to her and her will to get back.”

The Comets confidence is soaring right now, coming off a major win over Mount Notre Dame, a team riding a 98-game win streak. While that was a major confidence boost for the team, they know there’s more work ahead.

“It’s been awesome,” Razzano said. “Us juniors have been playing together since we were in 4th grade, and we’ve been talking about getting to this moment. So now that we’re finally here, we really want to take advantage of it. We’ve been thinking about it our whole lives, just to be here is amazing.”

Mason battles Massillon Jackson on Friday in the state semifinals. The winner advances to the OHSAA Division I State Championship Game, which will be available on Spectrum News 1 this Saturday.
