MARIA STEIN, Ohio — The Marion Local Flyers are a team that strives for perfection. However, in 2020, a state-record streak of nine-straight OHSAA state championship appearances was snapped, which has given this team something to prove.

What You Need To Know

  • Marion Local is back in the OHSAA Division VII state finals

  • The Flyers streak of nine-straight finals appearances was snapped in 2020

  • Now, the team is hungry and looking to reclaim what they believe is theirs

  • The seniors hope to end their high school football careers on the right note with a state championship

To say Marion Local has a successful pedigree would be an understatement, but it’s the slip-up last year that has the Flyers refocused.

“Last year was a disappointment, it was shocking when it happened,” Marion Local Head Coach Tim Goodwin said. “We were undefeated and having a good year, and we got beat.”

Tim Goodwin said that unsatisfying ending in 2020 is a big reason why his guys are 15-0 this year and knocking on the door of greatness once again.

“I think it was a motivating factor,” he said. “In the offseason and preseason, for our players and coaches alike.”

Marion Local has won numerous State Titles in football over the past decade.

One of the players leading the way is senior quarterback Peyton Otte, who absolutely bleeds "Blue and Gold."

“I’ve been managing and water boy since about second grade, and I’ve been ball boy in junior high, I mean, been around football all my life,” Peyton said. “It means a lot now being a senior and making it to state. I’ve been dreaming about it all my life.”

Peyton’s brother, Kyle, is a running back on the team who tore his ACL this season. While he can’t play in the big game, he said he’s proud of his big brother for leading the team this far.

“Seeing his senior season, state finals, that’s what all seniors hope to get to the state finals and win the state championship to end their career off,” Kyle said.

Peyton couldn’t agree more, but he said he can’t get caught up in the moment.

“You know, we gotta stick to what we’ve been doing all year and just keep getting better, strive for perfection and just play Flyer football,” Peyton said.

Goodwin said no matter what he knows the community is proud of the Flyers.

“Representing our community in a way that they appreciate,” Goodwin said. “Our community appreciates when our kids go out there and compete from start to finish.”

The Flyers have the chance to finish strong on Saturday morning against Newark Catholic in Canton.
