MT. GILEAD, Ohio — The community is coming together for a vigil in Mt. Gilead on Thursday to honor Morrow County Sheriff Deputy Daniel Sherrer, according to a Facebook event.
Sherrer died Monday, on Memorial Day, after responding to a domestic situation. After confronting the suspect, identified as Brian Wilson, gunfire was exchanged. Sherrer died from his injuries, and Wilson was in serious condition as of Tuesday.
The vigil will be held at the Morrow County Sheriff's Office at 101 Home Road in Mt. Gilead. The event said the candle lighting will begin at 8:30 p.m. and is asking participants to arrive early so that candles can be lit promptly.
Parking will be available in front of the sheriff's office and beside it, the event stated. Candles will be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants are encouraged to bring their own candles, as well as any flags, thin blue line items or anything else to honor Sherrer.
"Please come together with family, friends, and fellow officers as we honor Deputy Sherrer’s life, service, and ultimate sacrifice," the event stated.
Sherrer was 31 years old and was with the Morrow County Sheriff's Office since 2021. According to Sheriff John Hinton and loved ones, he always had a smile on his face and loved the community he served.
The vigil will come a day after a procession to bring Sherrer home to Mt. Gilead from Dayton.
