MORROW COUNTY, Ohio — The Morrow County sheriff's deputy who was shot and killed Monday evening has been identified as 31-year-old Daniel Sherrer.

What You Need To Know

  • Sherrer was responding to a domestic incident off of County Road 26 late Monday evening, south of Marengo

  • There was a shooting altercation with the suspect

  • Sherrer was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries

Morrow County Sheriff John Hinton said in a Tuesday press conference that Sherrer was hired by the department in 2021.

"You know, I don’t even know what to say," Hinton said during the press conference. "I call him a kid — he was 31 years old. He was a grown man. He always had a smile on his face. Never in a bad mood. He came to work every day. He loved this community, and he loved the job, and it’s unfortunate that we’re here today to talk about this."

Hinton said Sherrer was responding to a domestic situation off County Road 26, south of Marengo, around 7:30 p.m., according to the affidavit.

The affidavit shows that upon arrival, Sherrer encountered a neighbor who warned the deputy that Brian Wilson, who has been identified as the suspect, had a firearm and multiple shots had already been fired.

As Sherrer approached the house, Wilson had been sitting on the porch of the home with his firearm in hand. He had warned the deputy, "Don't come up here," according to the affidavit.

Sherrer tried to descalate the situation, according to the affidavit, but Wilson kept warning Sherrer to stay back. Wilson even told the deputy that he had better go if "you want your family to see you tomorrow."

When Sherrer attempted going up the steps, that's when gunfire was exchanged. Body camera footage included the sound of multiple gunshots. Sherrer was incapacitated, according to the affidavit.

Sherrer was transported to the hospital but died from his injuries, Hinton said. Wilson was also transported to a local hospital and is in serious condition.

Two firearms were recovered from the scene belonging to Wilson, the affidavit states.

Wilson is being charged with aggravated murder and is in the custody of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office.

"There are no words to express the pain being felt by our office today," Hinton said.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case with assistance from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

If anyone has any information related to the incident, they're asked to contact the Delaware County sheriff at 740-833-2830.

This is the second Ohio sheriff's deputy killed this month. On May 2, Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy Larry Henderson was killed after being hit by a car while directing traffic.

“My heart is torn by the loss of yet another Ohio law enforcement officer, who paid the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community. We are forever indebted to those who lay down their lives for others," said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. “I share in the anguish experienced by so many in this tight-knit community – my prayers are with Deputy Sherrer’s family, the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office and all who wear the badge."
