Rochester's School of the Arts will host a forum next weekend on mental health and substance abuse after a student fell from what police called "an elevated position" at the school on March 24. The student died later that day at Strong Memorial Hospital.
Officials with the City of Rochester and Rochester City School District say attendees can share their thoughts, questions and concerns in a panel discussion on Saturday, April 11 at 11 a.m. Youths ages 12 to 21 are invited along with their parents or guardians.
“Many of the challenges we have in our city and country are increasingly tied to mental health,” Mayor Malik Evans said in a statement. “With this forum, as well as through our ongoing work in the mental health space, we are striving to equip young adults with the tools they need for positive growth and development. Parents and guardians provide critical support for our young people, and so we invite them to join us in this effort as well.”
"Supporting the mental health of our students is essential to their success in school and life," RCSD Interim Superintendent Demario Strickland said in a statement. "When we create a safe space for open conversations about the challenges our children face, those challenges become more manageable."
The forum is being organized in partnership with several programs and initiatives, including Rochester City School District My Brother’s Keeper Fellows and the Mayor’s Office of Special Projects and Educational Initiatives.
Officials also say that if you’re facing mental health struggles or emotional distress or need someone to talk to, you can contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline via call, text or chat at 988lifeline.org.
