The planetarium will feature an 82-foot screen that will show 360-degree movies. The 300-seat theatre will show images in 8k projected onto the screen from 10 digital projectors.

MOSI officials said the new planetarium will host star shows of the night sky, show movies, have academic presentations, along with laser light shows set to music and weddings and corporate events.

Erecting the massive metal NanoSeam screen took 13 weeks. Crews then installed 10 state-of-the-art Christie digital projectors in January. Over the following two months, workers added lighting, configured seating and tested the cutting-edge DigiStar control system to officially bring America’s second-largest planetarium to Tampa Bay.

Starting April 1, several showtimes will be offered each day, with fascinating tours of the night sky presented by MOSI space experts and immersive 360-degree movies that take you to the edge of our solar system, beneath the surface of the sun and inside wonders of the ancient world.

“We’ve set the date for a powerful moment for Tampa Bay. We cannot wait for hundreds of jaws to drop at once when they see how this multi-million-dollar effort has brought one of America’s top STEM learning experiences to our area,” said MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith.
