CINCINNATI — At a time when uncertainty surrounds education systems, one district is trying something different to fill staff.
School leaders are opening the doors to Cincinnati schools to try and bring in more staff and give them a behind-the-scenes look at what could be their next job.
Andrea Wyatt is a Kentucky middle school teacher thinking about changing jobs.
“I’m relocating from Louisville, so I wanted to see whether or not Northern Kentucky district versus Cincinnati Public Schools and what would be a better fit coming from an urban district," she said.
That’s why she’s going on tour of a Cincinnati middle school as a way for her to help make her final decision.
“I wanted to just get a feel for the buildings, the energy, the feel people in the home office, that kind of thing, so I feel like once you get your eyes and hands on it, you have a better understanding of what your career will look like afterwards," Wyatt said.
For Cincinnati Public School leaders, it’s a way to bring in more staff. They're doing school tours followed by workshops and a job fair on Saturday
“Those workshops are really eye openers into what a what your first year of teaching in Cincinnati public could look like, so they're going to go through the process of hearing from our district-wide mentors," said CPS Talent Acquisition Manager Rolonda Smith. "They will hear what our new teacher selection model entails."
Smith said it's unclear exactly how much staff is needed, but she said they do have certain positions they’re trying to fill.
“We're hiring educators," she said. "We're looking for civil service positions to be filled. We have openings in our paraprofessional space. We have openings for crossing guards. We have openings for some of our custodial operations positions."
Wyatt is hoping to fill one of those positions as a middle school teacher.
“I think with a new experience I wouldn't mind trying something new, but I mean, middle school kids are my favorite, so I would hope that I end up in a middle school," she said.
School leaders will be taking the recruiting event from tours to workshops and a job fair on Saturday where they say close to 150 applicants are signed up to try to get a job in the district.
