“The interesting thing about bluegrass and Americana music is that there's a certain collection of songs that everyone kind of knows and you can kind of draw from that to play music together,” said Marc Mecoli, Moonshine Drive’s fiddle player.

“And you can be a complete beginner novice…and play with the best guy in the world, and you're playing the same song and it sounds okay,” said Greg Mecoli, the band’s upright bass player.

The two grew up in Dayton in a musical family. They were raised in the Suzuki method for violin and played in youth orchestras.

“Our mom sort of requires that you pretty much bring an instrument with you to any, you know, to Christmas or birthdays or whatever. So we credit her for a lot of this,” Greg said.

By playing bluegrass music together, the Mecoli brothers are following a blue grass tradition of family bands.

“You know, the fact that we've been playing music for 30 years together definitely helps a lot," Marc said. "And you know, I still get like, just excited and super happy when we're playing on stage and I look over, it's like, oh, there’s my brother."

Both agree that playing out for a lively crowd who claps and yells is more fun than a classical concert, and it’s a great break from their day jobs as physicians. When they are not on stage, Greg is an eye surgeon and Marc a pediatric anesthesiologist.

“We're all so busy with other jobs and careers and families, but when we do get together, it is a lot of fun to collaborate and learn new songs and then revisit old ones,” Marc said.

“And even though we've played the song a hundred times before, this 101st time is gonna be different because of the way that we communicate,” Marc said.

In addition to the Mecoli brothers, Moonshine Drive is made up of Corey Barrat on Mandolin, Clay Beverly on guitar and vocals and Louis Mazzocca on banjo.
