OHIO — While we'll get a break from the frigid temperatures this weekend, the Arctic air is expected to return next week, and some cities are already preparing by extending hours at warming centers.
Akron Mayor Shammas Malik announced the city is extending hours at the Summit Lake Community Center at 380 W. Crossier St. starting Sunday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The Emergency Overnight Shelter at 111 East Voris St. will close this Thursday and Friday, the mayor said in a post on X, but it will reopen Saturday through Wednesday, 7 p.m. to 8 a.m.
Additionally, the mayor made a call for donations for the Emergency Overnight Shelter, especially winter gloves and hand warmers. Donations can be delivered to the Peter Maurin Center at 1096 S. Main St. on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
In Cleveland, warming centers are still open on Wednesday. The city hasn't announced plans to extend the hours next week when the cold returns. For Wednesday, these shelters are open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.:
- Michael Zone Recreation Center, 6301 Lorain Ave., Cleveland
- Lonnie Burten Recreation Center, 2511 E. 46th St., Cleveland
- Collinwood Recreation Center, 16300 Lakeshore Blvd., Cleveland
- Zemla George Recreation Center, 3155 Martin L. King Blvd. Cleveland
The City of Dayton has shelters open until Saturday of this week. Monday through Friday, the following centers will be open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.:
- Greater Dayton Recreation Center, 2021 W. Third St.
- Lohrey Recreation Center, 2366 Glenarm Ave.
- Northwest Recreation Center, 1600 Princeton Dr.
Columbus
The City of Columbus has over 50 warming shelters that are open until March. Click here for shelters and their hours of operation.
