CLEVELAND — There are a few things that can bring joy to a face the way that holiday lights do, but how about a couple million holiday lights?
Generations of families have been going to see holiday lights at Nela Park in East Cleveland for 100 years.
General Electric has made holiday lights for generations.
Now, for the 100th year, the newest generation of lights will be bringing holiday cheer at Nela Park, the headquarters for what is now known as GE Lighting, a Savant company.
"So many of us here just have such great memories of years and years of coming to this facility, seeing the lights. It really means a lot to the city of East Cleveland to have this happen every single year," said Kathy Sterio, president of GE Lighting.
The display will shine at the 92-acre complex along Noble Road. It was originally set up as a drive-thru but there were homes in the complex then, and traffic would block people's homes for a month
Debbie George has been the holiday lighting designer for 22 years. This year’s display pays homage to the cars that once drove through it.
The drive-thru ended in 1959, but you can still walk along the displays and right up to a selfie station.
The original smoke stack — there were two of them, but one of came down — will be decorated for the first time in over 20 years.
in 2010, all the displays became LED and energy efficient.
The a 100th anniversary will be complete with a 30-foot birthday-cake display.
A ceremony to turn on the lights will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday and will stay on 24 hours a day through Jan. 6, 2025.
