CLEVELAND — If you are a homeowner, you are likely painfully aware of the expenses that come with it.

What You Need To Know

  • Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity is launching a critical home repair program

  • The program will provide repairs including gutters, siding, roofing and windows for eligible Clevelanders

  • The program focuses on homes in areas that Habitat is already assisting

For those on a fixed income, home repairs can seem finically out of reach, which is one reason why Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity is launching a critical home repair program that will provide much needed repairs for eligible members of the community.

Stan Taylor, the director of the critical home repair program, explained how they were able to recently remove an old building from a woman’s property, saving her money.

“The building was condemned so the city was citing her,” Taylor said. “We assisted her in removing that building because the alternative was that they would remove it but the bill would go to her property taxes.”

The critical home repair program launched in Cleveland last year. It’s income based and assists homeowners in neighborhoods that Habitat already works in.

“It’s not that they don’t want to repair their homes,” Taylor said. “They are not in a position where they can afford it.”

The program will provide repairs including gutters, siding, roofing and windows for eligible Clevelanders.

This program is supported by ARPA funding from the city of Cleveland and state of Ohio.

John Litten, the president and CEO for Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity, said the goal is to help improve neighborhoods in need of extra assistance.

“The area that we are in now, and many other parts of Cleveland, are formally red-lined neighborhoods where people weren’t given the opportunity for home ownership and certainly were unable to realize their fullest potential,” Litten said. “I like that we are able to go into some relatively poverty stricken areas in Cleveland and really help turn the tide, create generational wealth in the face of generational poverty.”
