OHIO — This year is officially the Year of Ohio State Parks, according to a declaration by Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, in recognition of Ohio State Parks' 75th anniversary.

"Ohio's state parks, where admission is always free, give visitors an opportunity to gain a deeper appreciation of Ohio's natural heritage,” DeWine said in a press release from his office. "The Year of Ohio State Parks is the perfect time to visit one or more of Ohio's 75 state parks, experience our state's natural beauty, and actively participate in the preservation of these treasured lands."

The release notes that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Parks and Watercraft is a crucial part in preserving the resources of Ohio’s parks.

Glen Cobb, Division of Parks and Watercraft chief, is proud of the state’s parks for everything they offer Buckeyes and travelers from out of state.

“For 75 years we’ve welcomed visitors, and we encourage them now to join in this statewide celebration,” Cobb said in the release.

ODNR Director Mary Mertz believes the state park system is the country’s best.

“We have exceptional employees who show a passion for our parks day in and day out, making sure everyone is able to make memories in these picturesque places,” Mertz said in the release.
