COLUMBUS, Ohio — Election Day brought a victory for abortion rights in Ohio. Voters passed Issue 1 by a solid majority.

  • Voters approved Issue 1, adding a new amendment to Ohio's constitution protecting reproductive rights and abortion

  • Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights said it plans to challenge the legality of current restrictions on abortion access because they say they conflict with the new constitutional rights

  • Opponents of the amendment said they will continue to challenge the right to abortion access in Ohio

That means a new state constitutional amendment protecting reproductive freedoms is now on the books, but that doesn't mean the fight is over for both supporters and opponents of the controversial procedure. 

To uphold the rights granted by the new amendment, Ohioans United for Reproductive Rights said it has a legal strategy to ensure current restrictions on abortion access are removed. 

But opponents of the measure, including some state lawmakers, said they plan to continue opposing the amendment and the availability of abortion in the state.
