CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians faced the Cincinnati Reds in the Guardians’ last home game Wednesday night. They came out with a 4-3 win at Progressive Field, but the game was more than just a win.
Longtime Guardians manager Terry Francona took the field one last time for his last home game. He has over 900 wins, which makes him the franchise’s winningest manager. He also took the team to the playoffs six times, including a trip to the World Series in 2016 when they fell one game short of the championship.
“All the things that happened here worked out for the right reasons and it’s probably why it lasted so long,” he said.
The Guardians passed out “Thank you Tito” t-shirts to 20,000 fans at the game. They also played a video tribute for him ahead of the first pitch. Francona expressed his love for the organization.
“My joy is what I do every day and who I do it with,” he said.
It goes beyond just the organization. Nancy Vitale, a longtime Guardians fan, said she will miss the manger who is best known at “Tito”.
“Tito’s just been such a great leader for the team and I can’t imagine we’re going to go on without him, but I know we will,” she said.
Francona explained that the last home game meant a lot, but that it’s been 11 years of good with the team.
“The 11 years here are what is the best part,” he said.
His last message to the fans was a simple thank you and he said he will still cheer for the team and the players even when he’s finished.
