COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced Wednesday that it has a new addition: a baby mandrill monkey.
The baby boy was born Oct. 16 to his parents, Malaika and Mosi, bringing the zoo's mandrill troop to five total.
"Malaika's baby is strong, curious, nurses often, and reaches out to touch items. We can expect the baby to venture off from mom when she sees fit," the Columbus Zoo wrote on its Facebook page. "Like other infants, the baby mandrill sleeps and eats often, and since he’s holding on to Malaika, he has easy access to food at all times."
The zoo said mom, Malaika, is attentive and protective of the baby, who doesn't have a name yet. Malaika's sister, Hasina, is showing interest in the newborn and dad, Mosi, is keeping his distance to be respectful.
Depending on the weather, the mandrills may not be visible to guests. Malaika and her newborn may stay inside in one of the rooms to bond in the meantime.
