One thing weighing on the minds of parents is how to keep their kids safe from the coronavirus while still letting them enjoy the pool this summer.

Dr. Amy Edwards, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at University Hospitals, said it’s still possible to go swimming and stay safe. She said the most important thing is for someone to not go to the pool, or anywhere else, if they are feeling sick.

If going to the pool, she said it’s best to keep kids away from other kids.

“We bring pool toys and things like that to keep our kids engaged,” she said. “Finding ways to keep them entertained with themselves or other members of the family is crucial to keeping them away from other kids.”

She said it’s important to remember outdoor pools are much safer than indoor pools with COVID-19.

“Being outdoors is always preferable to being indoors because it’s a lot harder for the virus to spread outdoors,” Edwards said.

Furthering that, she said the pool itself is relatively clean.

“Community pools are chlorinated and so because of that, viruses don’t live in chlorinated water,” she said.
