CLEVELAND — Baker Mayfield wants to be traded from the Browns, he told ESPN on Thursday.
“It’s in the mutual interest of both sides for us to move on. The relationship is too far gone to mend. It’s in the best interests of both sides to move on,” Mayfield told ESPN.
Earlier in the week, Mayfield posted a note to Browns fans that read like a goodbye letter, thanking fans for their support. Mayfield’s note came as the Browns reportedly were courting Texans QB Deshaun Watson.
Watson reportedly told the Browns on Thursday he is no longer interested in moving to Cleveland.
“We have made many memories and shared growing in this process through all the ups and downs,” Mayfield wrote. “I have no clue what happens next, which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process. I can only control what I can, which is trusting in God’s plan throughout this process.
“I have given this franchise everything I have. That is something I’ve always done at every stage, and at every level. And that will not change wherever I take my next snap. Whatever happens. I just want to say thank you to the fans who truly embraced who I am and the mentality that aligned so well with this city’s hard working people.”
Despite a down year for Mayfield, the Browns said following the 2021 season they were committed to Mayfield being the starter for the 2022 season.
“Baker fought through those injuries, was medically cleared to play each of those weeks, practiced throughout those weeks and felt good,” Browns Coach Kevin Stefanski said. “I do not think Baker is using any of that as an excuse, and also, not denying that guys play through injuries. He pushed through it. Again, I know there are plays and moments that he is going to want back. That is part of playing football, playing the quarterback position and trying to get better.”
Mayfield still has one more season left in his contract. It’s unclear if the Browns are willing to part ways with their starting quarterback.
