During All-Star Weekend, more than $550,000 was raised for the I Promise Scholars program.

This money will support educational expenses such as books, supplies, room and board and other needs of the I Promise students residing on the Kent State campus.

Don’Marie Reid has been a part of the LeBron James Family Foundation’s I Promise program since she was in the third grade.

Now, she is a freshman at Kent State, where she is able to attend with four years of paid tuition thanks to the program.

“It means more than just a name. It gives you opportunities,” Reid said. “It gives me a lot of opportunities here. We also have a very close-knit group.”

All the Kent State I Promise scholars live on the same floor in their dorm.

“Just like we say, we are family,” she said. “It gives you a second group of people to depend on if you need to.”

The students get to enjoy a lot of unique experiences together.

Most recently, they attended the NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland.

Reid said she was excited and relieved to find out how the money Team LeBron raised will be spent.

“It helps me make my plan,” she said. “I get to save up my money, and I get to live here for free and it is so much more convenient than having to drive 30 minutes here and back every morning.”
