CLEVELAND — After a series of winter storms blanketed the area this month, the American Red Cross Northern Ohio Region said about 6,500 blood and platelet donations went uncollected.

The region said that a number of blood drives were canceled due to winter storms.

On Jan. 11, the American Red Cross issued its first ever blood crisis, saying that it has experienced a 10% decline in the number of people donating blood since the beginning of the pandemic. The American Red Cross said shortages have continued as blood drives have been canceled or scaled back due to the pandemic.

The American Red Cross is working with companies to entice donors. Those who donate blood through the American Red Cross through Jan. 31 can get a dozen free doughnuts from Krispy Kreme. Those who donate blood with the American Red Cross in the month of February are eligible for a free $10 Amazon gift card.

The American Red Cross has the following guidelines in order to donate blood:

  • Be in good general health and feeling well
  • Be at least 17 years old
  • Weigh at least 110 pounds
  • Have not donated blood in the last 56 days

The entire process takes roughly one hour, the American Red Cross said.
