The Cleveland Cavaliers’ surprising run so far this season is causing a spike in sales for team-related merchandise at the Cleveland Clothing Co.
“We were in the status quo of, ‘Oh, it’s gonna be another one of those years, a rebuilding year and not much excitement,’” said Mike Kubinski, owner and founder of Cleveland Clothing Co. “And we were completely surprised. Caught off guard.”
Kubinski is a northeast Ohio native and a lifelong Cavaliers fan. He knows the highs and lows of cheering for the home team.
“I think that blue collar work ethic and midwestern work ethic is shown throughout our teams and our daily lives,” he said.
He started the Cleveland Clothing Co. to share city spirit.
“I noticed that there wasn’t really anything for Cleveland pride besides a couple brands that were more like street wear or punk rock, and were negative for Cleveland,” he said.
His store is still going strong after 12 years, with shoppers excited for new designs especially, right now, for the Wine and Gold.
“They’ve been going on a run and it’s been a lot of fun, but we were unprepared,” Kubinski said.
To keep up with demand, several new designs are in the works and more stock is expected to be on the shelves next week. He said the items reflect the spirit of the team and the city.
“They’re hard working, have great work ethic, teamwork… And they’re just a bunch of fun, fun guys,” he said.
