CLEVELAND — Despite the Browns being in the midst of a playoff hunt, Baker Mayfield has expressed frustration over his performance.
That frustration became evident after Sunday’s win over the Lions when Mayfield opted not to talk to reporters after the game. On Monday, Mayfield addressed his frustration.
“I have never dodged any questions or hid away from that,” Mayfield said. “It is not about that. Just frustrated, removed emotions and all that from it. Just decided it was best to wait.”
After throwing two interceptions to the winless Lions, some Browns fans booed the fourth-year quarterback. Mayfield snapped back at those fans.
“Those are probably the same fans that will not be quiet while we are on offense and trying to operate. Do not really care,” Mayfield said.
His performance prompted him not to feel like celebrating after the game despite winning a contest that put the Browns back over .500 for the season.
“My guys know that all I care about is winning, but I am going to be frustrated if I do stuff to make it harder on us, and I did yesterday,” Mayfield said. “That is just flat out where it was. I am never going to take winning for granted. That is something that is very hard to do in this league. It had not been a very common thing around here for a long time. I am just frustrated with how I played, and that is how I have always been.”
Mayfield has said he has been battling several nagging injuries, including one to his non-throwing shoulder. Despite questions on Mayfield’s health, coach Kevin Stefanski said he stands by his decision to keep Mayfield in the lineup.
“To that point, if he is limited and can’t play up to his potential, those are things that we will discuss,” Stefanski said. “He has played pretty well at times in the last few weeks. We will make sure that we have those discussions, and we will never do anything that is not in the best interest of the team.”
The Browns benefited from a solid defensive performance that included a pair of interceptions. Running back Nick Chubb also stepped up with 122 yards on 22 carries.
The Browns have arguably their most important game of the season Sunday night against Baltimore.
